When do Walleye’s spawn? (And where can I find them?)

Walleyes spawn in the spring when the time is right. Every location is going to be different. If the fish are spawning in Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago, the first week of April does mean that in Minnesota that walleye is spawning. The time of the year is spring. By washing the water and weather conditions are going to help you determine when the walleye are spawning in your specific area or wherever it is you will be fishing.

The water temperature will affect when the walleye are in pre spawn. If you watch the local weather reports, it will tell you the water temperature, weather conditions and whether or not the ice has thawed on the rivers or lakes. When the water temperature reaches forty degrees, you can bet the walleye are heading to the spawning grounds. If the water temperature goes over fifty degrees, that is the end of the spawning season.

The best places to keep an eye on for walleye fishing during the spawn are rocky areas, weeds, or any other area that will protect the eggs after dropped. The east and north sides of the river or lakes are the ideal places to look for walleye. The hot sun should melt the ice and water temperatures are warmer right in those areas. If you are fishing the walleye after spawning, you need to know when they spawn and then it takes about four to eight days before they are ready to really feed. The best time to get them is after spawning when they will strike anything that moves

Hi Dan, I live in a NW Georgia town called Dalton. We have a nearby Corp of Engineer lake called Carters Lake. This lake is fed by a medium sized river. The lake is approximately 40 yrs. old and was stocked with Walleye about 10 years ago. I know that there are plenty of walleye in this very deep lake, however, people around here don’t know how to fish for them, including myself. Could you give me some tips on how to locate and catch these fish in the spring time. Thanks, Larry Johnson
