What is the Best Bait for Walleye

whats the best bait for walleye

The best bait for hooking the walleye is going to be live bait such as leeches, minnows, night crawlers or artificial bait that appear and mimic live bait. You are going to want some type of bait that provides some movement that the fish is going to see and strike. Artificial bait might include the orange and chartreuse baits as well as the lead head jigs. The best bait is really minnows.

The walleye are big eaters during the fall right before winter and the bigger the bait the better. When fishing walleye that you intend to release, you should feed them minnows so they can continue to grow. Some anglers who intend to catch and keep prefer artificial lures for walleye fishing. Walleye are short strikers and if you have a minnow or night crawler, you will find that when they inhale their prey, the minnow is more appealing to them.

Presentation is the key factor to using bait. If you are using live bait, you need to keep it alive to attract the fish. With artificial bait such as the lead head jig, you would use something like this in weeded areas for fishing walleye. The best bait is going to be determined by your location of fishing, the time of day, the time of year and what other anglers strive with when fishing. The best bait is not always the norm. You need to watch the weather and watch the current to determine your bait as well.
