What are the best lures for catching Walleye under the ice?

The best lures for catching walleye under the ice are the split shot rig and hook or a plain jig. In many cases, anglers are using Airplane jigs or the plain old jigging spoon. The best of all these for ice fishing is going to be the jigging spoon. Now if you want to go a little fancier than a plain old jigging spoon, you might try the Buck shot rattle jigging spoon. The sound that comes from these rattles will definitely cause the walleye to strike out.

Another fine bait is the Airplane jig because it spins around as it sinks and looks like something flying in the water and the walleye strikes. Even when you use the Airplane or the jig, you are going to want to add a little incentive for the walleye. It might be a small minnow or even the maggot. Anglers have been finding out that adding the added incentive is causing the walleye to seek out the bait and strike.

The one thing to keep in mind is that every day and every location is going to determine what bait you use. It is best to have a few different lures and some live bait as well. You never know what the fish want on any given day. Walleye that strikes a jigging spoon one day, might not strike it the next day. Have a couple different lures with you and try a different one on each rod to see what is hot that day.
