pickerel fishing lures

Some of the advantages to using lures over live bait is the fact that they are a lot cleaner and easier to use. You don’t have to worry about keeping them fresh and there are many different ones to choose from. Having a bigger selection to pick from means that it will be easier to find something that will attract the pickerel. This in turn means more opportunities to reel in more fish.

When fishing for this species it’s recommended that you use a medium sized spinning rod and this can be combined with a quality spinning reel for some excellent results. It’s recommended that you use wire trace instead of regular fishing line because this fish has very sharp teeth that will cut right through regular line.

Methods used to catch pickerel:

*         Trolling is an excellent method used for this species because it allows you to use several lines at once. This means that you can cover more ground and use different baits at the same time so you can find where they are and what attracts them faster, all at the same time.
*         Fly fishing is becoming more popular all the time because it seems to work very well with this species. One reason is because the flies are so light they don’t scare the fish away when they hit the water. However, fly fishing may be a little harder to learn than some of the other methods so it may take some time to master the skill.
*         Casting is also a great method to use especially in the spring and fall. During these seasons they can be found in the shallows and around weeds and casting makes it easier to get the bait in the area where they are located. Cast your line past where the target area is and reel your bait down through the strike zone.

After catching the pickerel it’s recommended that you use a net to get them from the water to the boat. The net will help support the weight of the fish while you remove the hook. This will give you better control over the fish so you can keep your fingers away from those sharp teeth.
