3 Walleye Trolling Techniques

Walleye Fishing Tips

As you may already know the walleye is one of the most popular species sought after today. One reason anglers enjoy reeling in this species so much is because of the challenge they put up. The walleye is an elusive fish that will put up an amazing fight once hooked. For this reason, most anglers welcome all tips they can get to help them reel in more walleye. Below are a few of the ones that have proven to be effective.

It’s vital that you get your bait in the right area if you want the walleye to pay attention to it. This means keeping your bait just above the walleye because they tend to look upward when feeding, not down. For this reason, trolling is one of the most popular techniques used when fishing for the walleye. You can get the bait in the strike zone faster and easier than with any other method used.

The walleyes feed the most aggressively in low light conditions. Therefore, this is the best time to seek them out. You can be quite successful when night fishing or when fishing in the early morning or late evening hours. Overcast and windy days are great times to go fishing for walleye as well. Look for the walleye around structures where they can hide out and ambush the prey as it swims by. If you fish around rocks, brush, trees, grassy areas, ledges and so forth, you’re sure to entice a few walleye to strike.

It’s important that you always stay alert and search for areas where the baitfish is plentiful. This is usually an indication that there will be plenty of walleye in the area as well. You can also get a better idea of which baits will work the best when you know what the natural food source is in the area.

Choosing bait that is similar to the food found in the area will normally yield the best results.

One last tip to remember is that when the walleye takes your bait, it will be light and gentle making it hard to detect. What this means is that, if you’re not paying attention, you’ll miss it. Using lightweight gear and a sensitive rod will help you feel the strike so you’ll know when to set the hook for more catches. However, you still need to be alert and watch your line closely.
