Walleye Ice Fishing Equipment You Will Need

I’d like to do some Walleye ice-fishing but don’t really know how many of the gadgets I really need to buy. Can you give me a list of the most important equipment?

The first thing you are going to need is the auger ice drill, ice shanty (if you want) and a portable heater and lamp. You will also want a fish locator and/or an underwater camera. These are the basic equipment needs for any ice fishing. For walleye fishing equipment, you will want to invest in some equipment especially for walleye ice fishing. Here is a list of what you will need in general.

  • Rods and reels
  • Lures or bait
  • Tip ups
  • Test line
  • Jigs

The best thing to do is have different holes set up. You could cover all the basis and have a tip up in one hole and a jigging spoon in another hole. You would use a minnow on the tip up and hook the minnow right behind the fin so it can freely swim around attracting the walleye. The jigging spoon is a more aggressive way to fish and usually has good results in catching walleyes.

Your test line for ice fishing can be four to six pound test line if you are fishing the open water. If you are fishing the weeds, you need to use ten to fourteen pound test line, preferably braided such as monofilament. Rods and reels are a smaller version of what you would use with spring, summer or fall walleye fishing. The rod of choice for many is the Cabela’s XML ice spinning combo. This will take care of your rod and reel needs, The last thing you will need to something to keep your fish in after you catch all them walleyes.
