How can I catch more wallleye this spring?

If you want to catch more walleye this spring, you should go fishing just after the spawn. You will find the males and females looking for small minnows. This is a time when they walleye are feeding, but only in small amounts, so use small everything. Where you fish is also the major consideration if you want to catch more walleye. If know where the spawn takes place, you should position yourself at the areas where the walleye will return to the cooler and deeper waters. If you have mouths of rivers, channels or creeks, you will want to sit right outside the mouth. The walleye will be feeding, but until about the middle to the end of May, they will want smaller bait. During the season when Mayflies are in the water is another time and area to fish for walleye, but I have to tell you that this is a hard time to fish and be comfortable. The Mayflies will swarm and cause frustration. Overall, the best way to catch walleye during the spring is after the spawn. I do not like to recommend fishing pre or during spawn when there is time to fish after the spawn. If you would fish the pre spawn and during the spawn, leave the females alone. You do not want to interrupt the spawn, which could limit the population of walleye in years to come. It does take many years for the spring hatch to grow to a size that you can keep.
