History of Walleye Fishing

Upper Michigan

On area where walleye fishing has always been spectacular is in Upper Michigan on the waters of Bays de Noc. It is said that there are over four hundred thousand walleye in the waters that cover over thirty thousand square feet. Because of the population of walleye, the DNR uses the eggs laid in the rivers for transplanting in other waters so that the population can grow.

Many years ago, Upper Michigan was considered the place to go in the United States if you wanted to catch walleye. For the most part, this remains true. The Bays de Noc waters are filled with some trophy size walleyes. The fishing equipment has changed over the years, but the place to fish has not changed. This is in part thanks to the water and weather conditions in the upper part of the country.

Because most people head south during the winter and spring to fish walleyes, the walleye population is more than anywhere else is. Whether fishing summer, spring, fall or winter, an angler will be able to continue fishing in Upper Michigan because the walleye keep populating the waters. The only problem that could affect the walleye fishing everywhere is the problem with boats transferring the zebra mussels into the waters that hold the walleye. These mussels can kill off all plant life in the water that provides the oxygen needed for fish to survive. This means that all food sources will disappear as well.

Walleye fishing is a part of history and as long as the zebra mussels can be stopped from enter precious waters, the walleye fishing can go on for in future years. Anglers and boaters must be responsible when moving from water to water. Boats must be cleaned before entering any other waters.
