Learning to Shore Fish for Walleye

I don’t make enough money to buy a boat, but I want to get into Walleye fishing. What are some good things to try when fishing from shore?

The first thing to know about shore fishing for walleye is to have patience. There will be moments of frustration. Do not lose hope. There are ways to be a successful walleye angler from shore. Begin by purchasing a moderately priced rod and reel. Yes there is more expensive equipment on the fishing market line. That does not mean that it is any better than its less expensive counterpart. Save the big bucks for later on down the road when you are a pro at shoreline fishing or walleye fishing in general for that matter. One of the best reels to start with is spin casting combined with a medium action rod. This type of reel mounts on top of the rod for ease in casting and retrieving. Another great rod and reel combination to start with is a spinning reel with a medium action rod. Here, the reel mounts on the bottom of the rod for ease in casting and retrieving. With equipment in hand, you are now ready to venture out on a shoreline fishing expedition. Two essential pieces of information to keep in mind are walleye like food and shelter. Scan the water surface and look for an area where the water appears to be slowing down. This is called a break in the water. To walleye it is a place to catch the next meal. In deeper water, make every attempt to cast slightly past this area. Deep water signifies structure. Structure signifies shelter to walleye. Another good spot to try from the shoreline is the area just inside the bend of a river. Additional locations to try from the shoreline are weed beds, bridge pillars, docks and other structures along the shoreline. Walleye also like areas where there are subtle bottom surface changes. This can be from gravel to sand or vise versa. Keep in mind to always cast upstream from the current. Then let the current carry your line towards its initial location. The best times for shoreline fishing are anytime right before or right after a rain storm. Like virtually everything else in fishing, shoreline fishing is going to take time, patience and practice. After a few trips under your belt, you will be walleye fishing from the shoreline like a pro.
