How do I catch walleye in hot weather?

I’ve never had much luck fishing for Walleye in July and August – is it really possible catch when the weather is hot?

Well, the Walleye obviously don’t flee the lakes and rivers when summer approaches but finding them when the weather gets hot can present a challenge.  Don’t hang up your rod yet, a few of these tips might help.  Walleyes are a bit lazy and they certainly aren’t ones who’ll chase your bait very far but since they’re much more eager to accept a free meal than some other fish, the rule of thumb is if you can figure out where they are and what they‘re eating – you can usually catch them.  A fish finder will make your task much easier.  If you’re fishing in a natural lake, start out by checking the weedbed edges and the transition zones such as creek channels with a fish finder, you’re probably going to be looking for yellow perch as they seem to be the staple of the Walleye diet in this type of water.  Normally, if you can locate the Walleye forage species, the actual Walleyes won’t be far away.  Another mistake most anglers make is that they’re not fishing deep enough when the weather is hot.  Trolling with deep-diving crank baits make it easier to get down to a depth of 15-20 feet where the Walleyes will hang in the midsummer.   If they’re deeper, try bottom-bouncers with a spinner-crawler rig.
