Walleye fishing on the Columbia River is the best in Washington and Oregon. Anglers are seeing some trophy-sized walleye come out of the river. Fish around the underwater islands. The vertical jigging method works well if you have it mastered. It is best to have a fish finder because there are so many places on the river to find the walleye. In some cases, a bullet jig. If you are out for the day, you can try vertical jigging or dropping the bait right down in front of the walleye. They are going to be deeper, but some hang by the shelves right off the banks. You are going to need a good reel for river fishing. A soft touch rod is not good for the conditions under water in the river. You are going to need a heavier jig with a eight pound test line at least. The best place to vertical jig is by the islands, but also by the break lines. The walleye are usually in ten to twenty feet of water. Take your time. If you keep your bait near the bottom and add a little jigging in the mix, you should attract some bites. Keep this up for longer than a few minutes. Some anglers get impatient and move on when the walleye were right there just waiting for a little more action. If you find a good spot that has a school of walleye, stay there and try it for a while and you will get something.
