Walleye in Southern Ontario

Dan I have read many answers to the walleye questions you have written (and have searched the net)but I haven’t found anything much on southern Ontario. My group have been fishing together for years and this year are considering a drive-in trip for walleye. We want the remoteness of a fly-in style location preferably with a cabin but we would consider camping. We live in Toronto and are willing to travel for an 8 hour radius although less than that would be better. Can you make some recommendations please?

For some outstanding walleye fishing in Southern Ontario, you should look into a trip to the Kawartha region. This is one of the best spots in Canada for fishing walleye. This region has a total of eight lakes to fish; they are the Pigeon, Canal, Rice, Stoney, Buckhorn, Chemong, Balsam, and the Sturgeon. Most of the lakes are pretty much alike. There are areas in each where the walleye love to sit and wait for their food. Try some trolling in the shallow water; this works great in the spring time. Some very hot spots you can find in Kawartha are Gannon’s Narrows, which is found in between Buckhorn and Pigeon Lakes. Opening day you will find people lined up to get into the best location at this spot. Try the deeper areas with a jig and the live bait of minnow. There is Burleigh Falls, which is on Stoney Lake. This is one of the best locations to try some night fishing at too. Again, use a jig with a minnow. There is also the Causeway on Chemong, a great place for those who love to fish off the shore. Try live bait with crank baits to get the most action in this area. At the weed beds located by Red Rock Island, which is in Buckhorn, try crank baits and jigs, hitting the weeds for those walleye that are hoping to catch some food. On Stoney Lake you will find some islands to the east of Crowe’s Landing. This spot draws a bunch of walleye who love to be in the deep around the island. Bait should be deep diving bait or live bait. It is also a fantastic spot to go fishing during the dark. Try this fantastic region of Southern Ontario, and you will surely enjoy the trip to catch some great walleye.
