Ins and outs of Bass Fishing

Category: Uncategorized

I’ve heard crank baits mentioned by other Walleye fishermen. What is it and how does it work?

Crankbaits are popular bass lures that can be an effective tool in any fishing kit. This is due to its versatility and durability in luring bass and Walleye towards the hook. Crankbaits are available in virtually any size, shape and color imaginable. The first distinguishing mark of a crankbait is the lip or bill on the front of the lure. This is what navigates the lure through the water and reaches the bottom surface. The larger the bill size the deeper the depth the crankbait will be able to reach. Working along with this are two treble hooks attached to the bottom of the crankbait. These hooks catch onto a rock ledge, seaweed, or other structures along the bottom where bass may be hiding out. For effective use of a crankbait, make sure to use a slow action fishing rod. There are specific ones designed solely for the use of crankbait fishing. Otherwise, a medium action or fiberglass rod will work. When casting your fishing line, resist the urge to pull hard on the pole in the event the crankbait snags on something at the bottom. Most times, it is just the bill of the crankbait snagged and it will release within a minute or two. For deep fishing, select a sinking crankbait lure and allow it to sink all the way to the bottom before reeling in. Shallow running crankbait is ideal for shallow or medium water lengths. The reflection of the crankbait generates an instinctive strike response in bass and walleye.
