Find Out Why Walleyes Bite Better When It Is Windy

If it’s really windy – will that affect my chances of catching Walleye?

Windy days are an angler’s delight, windy days are great for catching walleyes. Although hard brisk winds cause boats to stay ashore, the walleyes are out there waiting for someone to bait them. Moderate winds allow some angles to get out on their boats and catch some nice sized fish. You might wonder why the wind would make the walleyes easier to catch.

One of the reasons is that the penetration of light is low due to the winds disrupting the water surface. This is when walleyes bite better because the low light in the water makes them more aggressive. There are days when the waters are calm and the sun is shinning, you will have very few bites. Later in the day when the sun starts going down and the wind picks up, you will have more bites than you had all day.

Walleye fishing is a sport and most anglers will rise early and check the wind velocity to see if the winds will be too strong to take the boat out or if the winds are moderate. If moderate winds are present, you will see boats starting to leave shore at dawn and if the winds keep up, they will probably catch their limit and return within hours. On a day with no winds, they could sit out on the lake all day and not catch one walleye.

Always remember, moderate winds are excellent fishing days on the lake, extremely windy days might even be too dangerous to be on the piers.
