Conquering Planer Boards

I’d like to set out at least six planer boards but it seems to take forever – do you have any tips to make this process any quicker?

Here is an outlined basic process for setting up multiple planer boards. Begin with a trolling run around the 2 mph speed mark. This will aid in keeping the boards to the side of the boat. Send out your first board with shallow bait and make this initial board your longest lead. Place the rod into a holder with almost precise vertical placement to keep the line separate from the water surface. With this rod in place, begin placement of your second planer board. For this, have a shorter line lead with a deep presentation. In this starting position, you now have two planer boards set. One is at the port side and the other is off the starboard side. This is sufficient to get you started. When the tattle flag falls signaling a bite on the line, let the trapped fish do all the work. Reel the line, board and fish back towards the boat. Once in range, net the fish and recast the board. By doing it this way, there is no disturbance to the other planer boards. A few extra educational tools can help you get started. Try using an 8 ft medium action down rod when setting planer boards. These rods tend to far better in water conditions, especially when there is heavy wave action. The stable backbone action will keep the boards in place and line placement holds above the water surface. In addition, a level wind counter reels will place lines in precise depth and distance settings. Each time you use this method, you will gain knowledge and hand-on experience in setting planer boards quickly and efficiently. As you get better, add a board each time. You will soon be up to the six planer board level in no time flat.
