4 tips when planning walleye fishing trips

Walleye fishing trips can be so much fun, but there are four things you really have to plan: Location, when you are going to go, what to take with you, and fishing regulations. There are plenty of places where you can fish for walleye. Some of them may be local and among your favorites. You can also go to areas that are far away that you drive to or that you fly to for a wonderful vacation get away.

For those types of trips you can search around online to find out what is out there. You can evaluate pricing, boat charters, supplies, the size of the walleye, food, and other perks of them. This type of investigating will help you to decide where you would like to have that fishing trip. It is completely up to you but there could be a preference about the types of locations that are more appealing to you than others.
Mid spring is often the kickoff of walleye fishing in most areas. The peak time is early summer due to the spawning habits. Keep in mind though that the time will vary based on water temperatures. The warmer the water is the sooner the walleye are going to take part in the spawning process.

You can fish for walleye any time of the year though so you don’t have to go just in the spring and summer. In fact, those will be the busy times when you have to share the water with everyone else. If you go during these times though you will find a boat is a great option. This is because the walleye can be in deeper waters. However, during spawning they will often be found closer to the shore.

Secure your lodging so that you will be able to get what you need secured. If you are going to be outside you can camp in your own tent or you can take an RV. You can also rent a cabin or even a hotel room. Many lodge areas offer plenty of sleeping areas and they can be perfect for large groups too.

Some people find that staying indoors helps them to plan well for the weather too. They don’t want to be outside in a tent with rain. They also don’t want to be outside in extreme evening temperatures. Fire bans can also determine if you will camp or if you will stay indoors.

You will need to decide if you are going to travel on your own too or with others. Sometimes getting a way for some piece and quiet so you can enjoy a fishing trip for walleye is just what you need. If you are social by nature though you may find that it is better to take along several people with you.

There are various types of bait that can work well for walleye fishing trips. You may want to consider worms, lures, stink bait, soap, and even minnows. The longer hours of daylight in the summer though brings them more abundance of food. As a result you may find that the walleye are picky and that they may bypass your bait. Change it up throughout the day until you find what they are responding well to.

Deciding what to take with you for a walleye fishing trip is important. Create a checklist so you don’t forget important items. If you are fishing in isolated areas it can be tough to get by without some certain items on hand. Be ready for the changes in weather, the fishing conditions, have plenty of water, and bring along clothing for layering.

If you are going on a charter fishing trip all of the supplies you need may be there for you already. This is convenient as you really just have to show up. However, you want to make sure you don’t assume anything. Always check to see what they offer and what you will need to provide on your own.

It can save you time to have them supply it all, but it will increase the cost. If you are looking to slash the prices then you should consider your own bait, your own tackle, and your own food for the walleye fishing trip.

No matter where you go to fish for walleye you need to make sure you follow the fishing regulations. You may have to get a fishing license for example and you may have limits on what you can take with you based on number of fish caught, the species of the fish, and the size of fish.

Such regulations can be found online so you will always know what you need before you get there. Don’t wait until you arrive to find out as you may lose part of a day of fishing to get all of the requirements taken care of. This is something that can be frustrating and time consuming so just take care of it before you go out there for walleye fishing.
