Previously, people did not think that they could fish for walleye in the winter months. But that has changed as this is getting more popular. There are many tips to fishing for these fish during the icy months. First understand that the walleye are best caught at first ice and the best time to fish for these tasty fish is at dawn and dusk as the walleye is very light sensitive. They are prone to respond to both jigging and tip up forms of ice fishing. They typical gear that you will need to fish for walleye in the winter consists of a slip bobber rig, six to eight pound line, split shot, light or medium action rod and an open faced reel. Always use live bait when fishing the walleye as well. An important tip that you will want to know is that these fish will respond to aggressive jigging although you will want to take it down to subtle taps. Most of this form of fishing is waiting it out. So be prepared to sit. Another important tip that you will want to know is that these fish will typically respond in the same methods as they do in summer and spring months. If you have been fishing religiously for the walleye in this same area all year long, then you have learned their habits. Use these points to your advantage, the walleye will still hang out in small beds of gravel and at the mouth of the water.
