Walleye Fishing Tactics

Normally, the smallest tackle will work the best when fishing for walleyes. It will make it easier for them to take the bait and it will help you feel when they strike so you will know when to set the hook. Worms, crayfish, minnows, crankbait and spinners are the best baits to use when fishing for walleye and you should always present your bait in a slow manner allowing the walleye time to focus and go after it.

Trolling, casting and drift fishing are three techniques that work very well when walleye fishing. These methods allow you to get the bait right in the middle of the group of walleyes without disturbing them. Jigs and minnows will usually produce the best results in the early spring and you will always get good results with live bait. When fishing with jigs you do need to use the ones that are a bit on the heavy side so it will carry your bait to the bottom of the water where the walleye are located much the time.

The three-way swivel rig has proven itself to be very reliable during the post-spawning season so if you have not been having a lot of luck in the past, then you should give it a try. Since the walleye are so light when they take the bait it is recommended that you use equipment that is sensitive so it will help you detect any movement when it occurs.
