The walleye will normally always respond well to live bait but they can be caught with artificial lures too. The best to use are spinnerbaits, crankbaits, spoons, grubs and plastic worms.

The Smithville Lake is stocked with the walleye making it one of the most popular lakes in Missouri. You will find that the best time to fish this lake is in the summer months. Jigging and trolling are great techniques to use no matter where you are walleye fishing in Missouri. Jigs, crankbaits and plastic worms work great in the summer and lures that resemble crawfish is always a big hit when fishing for walleye in Missouri. The best time to go out on the water is in the late evening to the early morning hours.

In the fall it is recommended that you use spoons, jigs and crankbaits and the best fishing times is still between late evening and early morning. In the winter the walleye are the least active of any other time of the year so you will need to use a slow moving technique to get their attention. The walleye will move around from one place to another but they will still stay in the general area. You can use a regular map and make a chart manually or you can use a GPS system to chart the location of the walleye.
