Walleye Fishing On Lake Oahe

Early in June, the Whitlock’s area of Oahe Lake can be a true dream come true for walleye anglers. As the warm water push from the upper region into the middle section, you will see more fish in these areas. You can usually fish in about twenty feet of water and catch a fair amount of fish using a bouncer and a hook and a nigh crawler. This is the choice bait for many anglers that are avid Lake Oahe walleye hunters. You can plan to fish the areas by the Cheyenne River, which does produce some good fishing. Tall Praire Chicken and Charlie creeks are other good areas for fishing.

One thing to watch for on Lake Oahe is the curly ponder weed. It can be a real bait stealer. The best ways to fish the weed is with a heavy bouncer and drop it right in the middle where the walleye are just hiding out waiting for food. This has added to the great fishing on Lake Oahe over the years. Walleye can hang in these weeds for days and months without moving. If you find these areas, you want to stop and drop a few lines right in the center of the mess.

One thing you need to watch when fishing from a boat is the wind conditions. The lake is big and some days the current from the rivers and other inlets can create havoc for the boat. You might have problems controlling the boat and need to retreat to a safer area. Early morning or at dusk are some good times to fish on the lake. Keep in mind that the area and water temperatures are a factor in where to fish.
