More Detroit River Walleye Fishing Tips

Recommended Fishing Gear and Basic Information

Every angler has their own special rod and reel they like to use when fishing but sometimes you may see better results if you try something new. High quality fast action rods and light tackle are recommended for catching walleye in the Detroit River. The bigger fish can put a lot of strain on your equipment causing damage. As a result, poor quality gear can ruin what could have been an excellent fishing trip.

Keep in mind that a high price doesn’t always mean great quality so spend a little time shopping around to find the best options. The monofilament line is a good choice when fishing the Detroit River for walleye. It’s strong enough to reel in the catch and in the event it gets tangled up in weeds and other structures, you can cut it loose easier.

When the walleye are first getting ready for spawning season on the Detroit River the bright colored jigs seem to work the best. Choose colors like yellow, chartreuse and orange. Then as the season begins to wind down, try switching over to plain jigs or darker colors for the best results. Always make sure your hooks are sharp and in good condition. It would be a shame to lose a good catch over a bad hook.

The walleye have very sensitive eyes so they tend to avoid open areas and places where the sun shines brightly into the water. You can save yourself some time by avoiding these spots and searching around structures and covered areas. The best time to go fishing is between late evening and early morning. This is when the walleye will be the most actively feeding.
