Can I use slip bobbers to fish for walleye?

Category: Walleye Rigs

Is using a slip-bobber an effective method for catching Walleye?

A slip bobber or slip float is an excellent way to keep your live bait close to the bottom of the area you’re fishing which is usually where the Walleye tend to stay put. These floats or bobbers move freely up and down the line and placing a bobber stop at the desired depth will hold it exactly where you want it.  The line is actually threaded through the float so all you have to do is attach your bait and a split shot above the hook for weight.  The bobber stop is small enough that it will easily move past the line guides and onto your reel.  When purchasing bobber stops, make sure you’re buying the right size for the pound-test line you’re using.  Both Octopus and circle hooks are effective choices when using a slip bobber of slip float.  While a number 4 hook is your best choice when using large minnows you can move down to smaller sizes for use with  night crawlers or leeches.  There are a variety of floats for almost every occasion.  If you’re night fishing, you may want to try a lighted float, while an oval float is especially helpful if you’re trying to cover a large area of water.  Pencil floats offer very little resistance and will cast farther and drift more slowly.   When choosing a float, you’ll want to consider the type of bait you’re using, the strength of the current, the distance you’re casting and the velocity of the wind.  Take a little time to see what’s available and figure out which design works best in which conditions.  Once you’ve picked your favorites and stocked your tackle box, you’ll be ready for anything mother nature throws your way.
