There is an area (or a lake) called “Ausuble” in Michigan. I’m going to go walleye fishing there for the first time. What bait should I use, and where should I go?
Well first off, let me tell you the river system is called the Au Sable. It is in Lower Michigan around the Fredrick area. The Au Sable is spring creek. The best location for walleye fishing is by Loud Dam. Actually anywhere from Alcona, south to Loud Dam has some good walleye fishing. Another area is from the Foote are to Lake Huron. The water temperatures are just right for walleye. The best bait that seems to work is a jig and a minnow by the Foote and Lake Huron area. Keep in mind that this area also has steelheads that are very aggressive. When you cast your bait, you do not know what you are going to get. The trout do not like this area because of the water temperatures, but the steelheads are stubborn fish that live anywhere. In the Fredrick area to the Loud Dam, use a minnow and a jig. It seems that the walleye are more subdued in this area and appear easier to hook. I would take along some other tackle as well, but you will have good luck with the jig and minnow more so than with anything else. Remember to stay away from the areas that are for “flies” only. This is for trout anglers, but you do not want to get close to these areas just in case you catch a trout by accident. Try fishing around the Lake Huron area of the Au Sable and you will be just fine.
