Being a resident of Iowa, you have a virtual playground of lakes from which to chase after Walleye. The record walleye catch happened in the Des Moines River.. Walleye is hunted mainly for its white, flaky flesh that produces an incredible taste when prepared. Prime target grounds begin in the north-west portion of the state. Here the largest lake is Big Spirit Lake at a massive size of 5,700 acres and comprises the border between Iowa and Minnesota. It’s neighbor, Spirit Lake which stands at 3,400 acres and is also situated on the Minnesota border. Next comes Storm Lake at a slightly less size dimension of 3,000 acres. Smaller yet but still dominate is East Okoboji Lake at 1,800 acres. This lake lies in north- west Iowa in the town of Okoboji. Rounding out the system of lakes in north-west Iowa is Five Island Lake at 900 acres. This lake sits in Emmestburg, Iowa. Black Hawk Lake can be found just a mere 10 miles to the east of Odebolt. Its size is 900 acres. The remaining two lakes in this region is the 830 acre Big Creek Lake two miles north-west of Polk City. Finally comes Brushy Creek Lake standing tall at 690 acres and three miles north-east of Lehigh, Iowa. Moving towards the center of the state, you will find Clear Lake. This 3,700 acre lake sits in the north-central part of the state in a town bearing the same name. The largest lake in this portion of the state is Coralville Lake at 5,300 acres. This can be found just one mile north-east of the town North Liberty. The 880 acre Three Mile Lake is seven miles north-east of Creston. Lake Macbride can be found two miles north-east of North Liberty, Iowa. Completing the package is the 670 acre Lake Icaria that sits two miles south-west of Carbon, Iowa.
