Walleye Jig Fishing Tips and Pointers

Jigs are designed to be used as lures and can be cast in many different depths and around structures such as logs, stumps or into grass. To use them this way you simply follow the same technique that you would for a casting lure when fishing. They can also be used as “drop bait”. You start off by casting to the bank and engaging the spool. Allow the jig to fall on a tight line and when it hits the bottom you will drop the rod tip and reel up the slack. Draw the rod back up slowly to move the jig through the water and start the process over again. Make sure you set the hook as soon as you feel the bite to secure the walleye.

Another technique is called “swimming” and it is done by casting out the line and slowly drawing it back in by positioning the rod at a 10 o’clock angle. This will cause the jig to flow through the water like live bait fish. Remember to always keep your line tight or you will most likely not feel the walleye bite. This is because their bite is so delicate if you have slack in the line you won’t even notice they are there. Jig fishing demands a lot of concentration and patience. As long as you are motivated and persistence you will be successful and end up with a lot of fishing stories to tell.
