When vertical jigging, there are many different lures you can try but
our favorites are jigs and spoons. Try a variety of sizes, shapes and
brands until you find one that seems successful on a particular day.
Don’t allow too much slack on your line or you
won’t feel the bites when they come. You can also vertical
jig with live bait such as cut worm or live minnow.
Hunt for them in vegetation- Walleye have a knack for hiding around
vegetation areas. They like sand grass, cabbage and coontail and other
grasses that could be growing around or in the water. This is a great
place for them to lie in ambush and jump out at unsuspecting minnow
prey.
Try fishing with weed line in these vegetated areas to catch more
walleye in the fall. They will often lie along the edge of the
vegetation and wait for baitfish or your bait to come passing through
for their lunch. With this in mind, look around for baitfish. When you
see a lot in an area, you know it’s a great place to find
walleye, especially in fall when many food sources will be scarce.
Drift fishing for walleye- Another tactic that works for walleye
fishing in the fall months is drift fishing from your boat. Because
they are often located deeper in the water, this can be a very
productive way to fish.
Be sure to control the speed of your boat while drift-fishing. You
should judge a speed according to the depth of the water and the
aggressiveness of the fish as well as water conditions that day. Adjust
the size of your weight according to the speed your boat is going.
Don’t go too fast or your bait will lift up from the bottom.
It can also startle fish that would otherwise be interested in a nibble
if your bait is moving too fast or not weighted down properly.
All of these tips should help you have more success when fishing for
walleye in the fall months. Keep in mind that not every tactic works
every time and you will need to experiment some and find your own
groove.
