For Walleye the presentation must be totally different. My
preferred lure is a weighted jig head that I tip with a live black
ribbon leech. You need to fish this combination very slowly
along the bottom. I like to pick the jig up off the bottom a
few feet and allow it to drop. It is often on the drop that
your strikes will occur so keep very aware of your line during this
time.
You will find these fish in entirely different habitats for the most
part. Northern Pike prefer weed lines. For fish
under ten pounds a section of water about eight to twelve feet deep
with heavy cabbage weeds would be the prime spot. As Northern
Pike get larger their metabolism slows and they tend to frequent water
that is much deeper. Remember the Northern Pike is strictly a
cold water fish. They do not do well in southern
waters that do not offer much cold water areas.
Walleye prefer deeper water but most likely for different
reasons. They prefer a rocky, sandy or gravel bottom and
generally do not relate to shore like the Northern Pike prefer to.
When encountering these species in rivers you will find them in
different areas as well. Northern Pike do not often do well
in rivers. In the absence of cold water you will find them in
the calmer sections of the river that often have weed growth.
Walleye on the other hand prefer the fast moving current of the main
portion of the river. They can be found near dams or around
large rocks in the middle of the current.
