Differences Between Pike Fishing Tackle And Walleye Fishing Tackle

The personality of these two fish also affects the way you retrieve a lure.  Walleye generally prefer a very slow retrieve.  Walleye are fish that likes to inspect an offering before picking it up in their mouths.  A fast retrieve will often not pique the interest of this species.  As a result lures are typically retrieved very slowly and near the bottom.  Northern Pike on the other hand can and will move very swiftly and attack your offering at full speed.  This species demands a much quicker retrieve speed.

In locating these two species of fish you will need to be cognizant of their habitat requirements.  Walleye prefer deep water; their eyes are very sensitive to light so they prefer to be near the bottom of water that is at least fifteen feet deep.  They prefer rock and gravel bottoms to areas of the lake with weeds. In rivers they prefer fast moving water to slower backwaters of the river.

Northern Pike are completely different in habitat preference.  They are a nomadic species that does not stay in one area.  They cruise all different level in the water from the top to bottom. They can be caught on top water bait or bottom bouncing crankbaits.  They prefer weedy areas for ambush points and do not relate to rocks as Walleye often do.  In rivers you will find them in the backwater areas that tend to have more weed growth and water that moves at a much slower pace.

The only real similarity between these species is that they are both predator species that have teeth. But even here there are differences.  A Walleye has much fewer and smaller teeth and can be fished without the need for a wire leader.  Fishing for Northern Pike without a wire leader is not a very good idea if catching fish is your goal.
